Field hockey struggling

Feelings were riding high for Fairfield's field hockey team coming into this season, after they lost last year by a goal and finished second in the NEC Championship Game. The team carried that small success over to the season opener by defeating UMass 2-1 in Amherst, Mass.

Sophomores could lead volleyball back to top

By Scott Apuzzo Most teams with two sophomore captains are not favored to win league championships. But most sophomores are not Lindsey Lee and Jazmin Pa'akaula, and because of that, the Stags' women's volleyball team was picked first in the MAAC pre-season coaches' poll.

Ex-stag Gai signs with 76ers

All year, the question came up at Fairfield and throughout the MAAC: Will Deng Gai get drafted? On June 24 in New York City, the answer came: No. But in a turn of events that coach Tim O'Toole said is extremely favorable, the Stags' all-time leading shot-blocker is under contract with an NBA team, and could be the first Stag in more than a decade to play in the league.

The men's soccer team was picked third in the pre-season MAAC coaches' poll -- not bad in a ten team league. But third place for this veteran team would be a severe underachievement. "[A league title] is a must," said defender Alex Cinliffe '07.

As a new academic year begins, Fairfield students have a wealth of opportunities before them. There are clubs to join, jobs to interview for, and events to attend. In the midst of all this, we should remember that an important part of college life is to participate in university activities as a campus community.

That is how I go through life, and although my friends loathe the fact that I am the epitome of anti-technology girl, I truly love it. With the increasing use of technological devices, people have become less sociable and more insecure.

If there was any doubt that George W. Bush is the single worst president in modern history, the amazing incompetence he displayed in his inaction to Hurricane Katrina should set that claim in stone. In the wake of the worst natural disaster to hit the United States in at least a century, it is worse than tragic that Americans should have to question their Commander-in-Chief.

The slow response of the federal government to the Hurricane Katrina disaster raises the question: Is the United States prepared for any future domestic catastrophes like 9/11? The category-four hurricane was detected in advance similar to the prior warnings of terrorist attacks before 9/11.
