I may be new at Fairfield, but I didn’t fall off the fashion truck yesterday. We are well into fall, and I have noticed some major fashion faux pas, especially among the ladies around campus. Many of these guidelines are not rocket science, but simply helpful reminders to make you more presentable and confident in your wardrobe choices.
1.Back away from the flip-flops! We live in New England and the weather is always unpredictable. A general rule of thumb is that flip-flops and sandals should be tucked away after the first day of fall or at least after the first frost (which did occur already). Flip-flops are only suitable during this time of year in the shower, the gym, or if you are going on a cruise when it is warm.
2.Summer clothes, away! As with flip-flops, you should start scaling down on your summer attire. Keep a few t-shirts and shorts for the gym or layering when it gets colder but put shorts, cropped pants, or any other warm-weather clothing away.
3.Designer doesn’t mean fashionable. Sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but it makes sense, especially when it comes to purses and handbags. Fall is not the time to bring out the pink Dior, the white Coach, or show off the Vineyard Vines tote that you got on sale. Save them for next spring or summer. Stay away from pastels, canvas, or other summery colors and textures.
4.Be original, not a mannequin. Not every trend is suitable for every body type. When you go into a store or boutique, don’t buy what is featured on the models! Stop trying to shove yourself into outfits that fit incorrectly. A great pair of jeans, some cool shoes, maybe a distinct bag, and a simple shirt is very chic.
5.Pajamas: only for bedtime. An eight o’clock class does not mean that you should not get dressed in the morning. Sweatshirts and sweatpants are okay, but at least look like you tried! Stop with the pajamas; it just draws attention to the fact you did not shower before heading to class. (Tip: lay your clothes out the night before and avoid struggling in the morning.)
Okay, these are just a few words of wisdom to follow. I am not saying to be a preppy clone, but experiment with fashion and take pride in your wardrobe. Using the excuse “I paid $40,000 to go here” does not give you the right to dress like a slob. Ladies, you never know when a job or relationship prospect will present itself, so wear something that suits you and have fun with fashion!
