Sophomore Jack Cleverly, a member of the men’s soccer team, was struck by a drunk driver on Fairfield Beach Road early Sunday morning, according to Fairfield police Sgt. James Perez.

The 20-year-old England native was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, where he is currently in stable condition with broken bones, a laceration on his head and a neck injury, Perez said.

Officers who responded to the scene found Cleverly unconscious, bleeding from the back of the head and struggled to find a pulse before paramedics arrived.

The driver of the white 1990 Audi, Robert Velky, a 21-year-old Fairfield resident, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after failing a field sobriety test at 12:40 a.m.

Cleverly is a defender on the Stags soccer team and has started 22 games in his career. His parents have flown in from his hometown of Dorset, England to be with him.
