Last year on Valentine’s Day, when I was going to school in Manhattan, it was impossible to get on a train or bus without seeing at least four couples sitting next to each other with heads lying one on top of the other, whispering to each other that same three word phrase.

How did I feel about that? Well, over the years I’ve developed two views on being single on Valentine’s Day.

Number One: Being indifferent. Who cares if you are single? You are busy enough as it is with work and other things; who needs that added pressure of doing something extravagant for this one day?

Plus who needs a significant other, I’ve got plenty of friends, most of whom are single, too, and we can all just hang out and laugh at the ridiculous lengths the couples go through to make each other happy.

Number Two: The lonely emo view. It goes a little something like this: “I hate this holiday! Why the hell did they ever think of it? Oh yeah, to sell greeting cards, flowers and chocolates. I can’t believe those people over there, look at ’em making out in public without a care of other people’s feelings, animals! Ehhh, it’s alright they’ll break up in a week.”

At this point you usually put on that playlist you made last night specifically for today which features songs like “I Am a Rock” by Simon and Garfunkel and “I Hate Everything About You” by Three Days Grace.

Whichever view you may take, remember that February 15th is just right around the corner.
