Fairfield for Obama

Cheers rose from the crowd in the lower level BCC every time CNN announced a projected state win for Sen. Barack Obama. After CNN projected that Obama would win Ohio, Sen. John McCain’s aids were pessimistic about his chances for victory. No Republican president has ever been elected without winning the state of Ohio. Obama won Ohio, Iowa and New Mexico, three key states that went to President Bush in 2004. The state of Connecticut and its seven electoral votes also went to Obama in his bid to become the 44th President.

Republican letdown

After eight years of a republican presidency, the democrats won office for the first time since Bill Clinton in 1996. Sen. John McCain congratulated Sen. Barack Obama on his victory in a speech after the announcement. He noted that America today has moved far away from the bigotry of year’s past and that the election confirmed that. In another republican loss, longtime Republican Congressman Christopher Shays conceded his seat to Democrat Jim Himes. Shays was the last Republican representative in New England.

Fairfield student running for state House of Reps loses

Fairfield junior Amanda Parks took on Democratic incumbent Kim Fawcett as the GOP’s representative in the 133rd District for State Representative. Parks ran on a platform of reform, both green and financial. She refused to take money from the state to fund her campaign, instead encouraging her supporters to place white ribbons on their cars.
