Jeff Seiser took his first steps as FUSA president in the direction of the School of Nursing, where he introduced himself and his five nominees for the FUSA Executive Board at the Senate meeting Sunday.

Before each nominee was presented to the Senate, they met with the FUSA Review Committee to seek reconmendations. The committee is comprised of two senators – Dan Lamendola ’09 and Alison MacNeill ’10; two class council members – class presidents Brendan Monahan ’10 and Kyle Duggan ’11; and two court justices – Amanda Klecker ’09 and Patrick Kelly ’09.

Each representative recommended candidates on a five-point scale: of “highly favorable”; “favorable”; “favorable with reservation”; and “unfavorable.”

Before the voting took place Senate Chair Tim Rich called for a five-minute recess to relieve himself. Staff Advisor Caroline Joy and acting Vice Chair Jamie Abromaitis ’09 joined Rich in the hall.

The committee reviewed the application, heard a presentation from Seiser and questioned each candidate.

Joy stayed for a portion of the executive session, in which the public was asked to leave, in order to better understand the approval process.

According to FUSA officials, it was the first time in recent memory that the advisor was in the room for that portion of the meeting. Senate usually uses the closed session to discuss personnel matters that may relate to a personal issue of the nominees.

The nomination of Jordan Hummel ’10, Seiser’s nominee for secretary of communication, was tabled and will not be voted on until after Easter Recess. The tabling was a result of Rich’s motion for a tabling, to which Senate agreed.

When a Mirror ad was presented by Seiser as an example of Hummel’s publicity abilities, it was claimed to be the design of Sen. Rob Fitzgerald ’08, The Mirror’s Chief Operating Officer. Fitzgerald interjected because he had created the ad, not Hummel. Fitzgerald worked with Hummel to produce the ad.

Seiser will resubmit Hummel’s application on March 30 and will then be reviewed.

Rich said, he “decided to table the nomination when it became evident that the ad was made by Rob [Fitzgerald].” The remaining four nominations were approved, receiving overwhelming majorities.

Allison Dailey ’09, who was nominated for the post of secretary of academics, was approved by the Senate 24-2 with two abstentions – Steve Lagouri ’09 and Christine Mauro ’09. The two “no” votes came from MacNeill and Tara Weiner ’09.

Meghan Doyle ’09 was approved for the position of Executive Director of Programming, by a vote of 28-0. Three members of the review committee said that Doyle was highly favorable, while three said that she was favorable.

Doyle and Abromaitis, were approved for the positions of secretary of Student Life and Secretary of Treasury, respectively. Both received six unanimous marks from the review committee, and then received uncontested approval from the 28 senators who voted, with Abromaitis abstaining.

The four approved nominees will join Seiser, Vice-President Emily Dragone ’09 and Lamendola to comprise the FUSA Executive Board, along with chair of SOBOG Alan Guffanti ’09 and Chief Justice of the Student Court Ally Ghiorizi ’09, who will commence work on April 13.
