‘Tell me why’ The Beatles aren’t on iTunes ?

If you have ever looked for your favorite Beatles songs on iTunes, you’ll know that The Beatles are one of a few major recording artists whose songs are not available through online music services.

There has been much speculation online about iTunes purchasing The Beatles.

According to the publication, The Cleveland Leader, Paul McCartney has authorized the release of The Beatles’ iconic music to iTunes in a deal that would be worth over $400 million.

Many music fans attribute the sudden distribution of music to McCartney’s need for money to pay for his divorce with Heather Mills, which will cost him $48.6 million.

McCartney would share the wealth with Ringo Starr, as well as the families of late Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison. In addition, EMI, Sony and Michael Jackson would receive royalties for the songs that they own.

Apple has not released any press releases regarding the purchases. Jason Roth, the senior manager of music at Apple, told The Mirror that Apple does not confirm or deny rumors, and made no other statements regarding the deal.

One of the reasons why The Beatles’ music is not yet on iTunes is a trademark dispute between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps.

Apple Corps is a holding company founded by The Beatles that owns their record label, Apple Records. The two companies have had a series of lawsuits and settlements regarding their shared name from 1978 to Feb. 5, 2007, when they had a final settlement.

When the settlement was made, Lennon and McCartney’s solo albums began appearing on iTunes.

Will The Beatles ever appear on iTunes?

Jamie DeStefano ’10 hasn’t tried looking for The Beatles on iTunes, but thinks it’s ridiculous that they are not there.

“[iTunes is] such a convenient way to sell music nowadays. If someone doesn’t want your whole album, they can just buy one song,” he said. “I personally don’t think $400 million worth it because I’m not much of a Beatles fan. But they are very popular, so i bet iTunes could still generate a profit off that.”

Kathleen Tuccio ’10 looked for The Beatles on iTunes and came up short. Wanting a dose of The Beatles, she purchased the “Across The Universe” soundtrack instead.

“They definitely should be on iTunes,” she said. “They’re a very popular band, and I just kind of assumed they would be on iTunes.”

We can only hope to a final decision soon is made soon.
