Every year the Caban family ventures to Barton Orchards in upstate NY to go hunting for the perfect apples. It is one of the very few traditions we have stuck to after many years, and I most definitely do not want it to end anytime soon. This tradition encompasses everything I love about my favorite season: the crisp air, the sweet smell of ripe apples screaming to be picked, and the satisfyingly sweet sensation of biting into an apple cider doughnut.

I am sure many of you partook in the same venture during the Columbus Day weekend and now have an overabundance of apples. You are probably thinking, “What could I possibly do with 15 lbs of apples? You can only make so much apple pie” (I disagree with this statement, you can NEVER have too much apple pie). But keep in mind the apple is a versatile fruit. It can be baked, grilled or sautéed and used in either a sweet or savory recipe. Any way you cook or bake an apple it will taste good because of the simplicity of its taste.

Upon returning from the orchard I got busy in the kitchen. I made apple pie cupcakes, apple and cheddar paninis, and toast topped with peanut butter and apple among many other things. I also attempted to make apple chips, but because of lack of equipment (a mandolin to be exact) I didn’t exactly succeed per se. However, I did make a delicious treat: baked apple slices. I find that this healthy snack is perfect for subsiding my hunger between meals. It’s super simple to make, with only 3 ingredients, and is definitely “non-baker-type” friendly.

Let me know what you made with your apples. I am always happy to try new ideas and if it’s good enough I’ll make sure to feature it on the blog!
