An 18-year-old freshman at Rider University died of alcohol poisoning last Friday after drinking excessively at an on-campus fraternity house. Gary DeVercelly, a management major from Long Beach, Calif., was rushed from the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house to the intensive care unit early Thursday.

Colorful balloons, Godiva chocolates and a bottle of champagne decorated the office of Timothy Law Snyder, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Thursday afternoon. These gifts celebrated his coming birthday as well as the announcement that he has accepted the position of vice president for Academic Affairs at Loyola College in Maryland.

Defining the Catholic identity within a Jesuit style is not an easy task. However, Rev. John Randall Sachs gave five characteristics that explained his idea of an ideal Jesuit, as part of the Bellarmine Lecture Series. Sachs used documents from the controversial Second Vatican Council, the ideas of which one audience member said could have a polarizing affect on the Catholic Church in the future.

A total of three students sat in the audience as Hutch Williams '08 and John Daly '08, the unopposed candidates for the positions of FUSA president and vice president, spoke during a forum Tuesday afternoon in the Barone Campus Center.

Timothy Law Snyder, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, announced Thursday that he has accepted the position of vice president for academic affairs for Loyola College in Maryland. Snyder has been at Fairfield for six years, serving as both a dean and as a professor of mathematics and computer science, will begin his new position at Loyola in July.

Fairfield students are not alone as they mourn the fading traditions of Spring Weekend events. Many schools throughout Connecticut are tightening their grip on the policies regarding drinking during these annual festivities. Quinnipiac University and UConn, for example, both have notorious Spring Weekend celebrations reminiscent of Fairfield's own long-lost Clam Jam.

The positions held by John Daly '08 already range from student senator to DJ for WVOF; now he is looking to add FUSA Vice President to that list. Daly announced that he is teaming up with current FUSA President Hutch Williams for this year's FUSA election race.

With its funky atmosphere and musical entertainment, the Las Vetas Lounge has always positioned itself as more than the average coffee shop. Its latest venture sets it apart even more; patrons can now bring their own alcohol. Las Vetas Lounge, located on Post Road is now considered a B.Y.O.B., meaning customers can bring their own bottle of wine and the lounge will provide wine glasses at a cost ranging from $8 - $12

With the national excitement of another Super Bowl less than a week away, Fairfield students have surprisingly little idea of what they will be doing for the Big Game. The match-up between the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts is riddled with story lines, from Peyton Manning getting the chance to win the big game to the first time a black head coach will be in the Super Bowl.

In terms of housing, there is Gonzaga for freshmen, Loyola for sophomores and townhouses for juniors: but could a residence hall for faculty be next?
