Field Hockey

A 2-12 overall record. A 0-3 mark in the Northeast Conference. A 10-game losing streak. The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole story. Recent Fairfield field hockey game scores, for example, don't reflect the sweat, tears and numerous practices team members endure before heading out to the field.

The Fairfield University field hockey team (2-10) was defeated for the eighth straight game Wednesday, falling 2-0 on the road to Brown University in non-conference play.

In a heartbreaking loss, Rider, now 7-2, defeated Fairfield in a game that went into overtime. Although Fairfield ultimately lost 2-3, the Stags played a terrific game right until the very end.

The veteran players of Holy Cross proved to be too much for the younger Stags as Fairfield lost 4-1 this past Sunday. The loss dropped Fairfield's record to 2-7 placing them 6th in the Northeast Conference.

Beginning a season with a tough non-conference schedule can prime a team for conference play, for Fairfield women's field hockey it may have done just that. Despite a slow start to the season, the team has stepped up and won three of their last four conference games.

Feelings were riding high for Fairfield's field hockey team coming into this season, after they lost last year by a goal and finished second in the NEC Championship Game. The team carried that small success over to the season opener by defeating UMass 2-1 in Amherst, Mass.

Two seasons after winning the Patriot League and earning a trip to the NCAA tournament, the Fairfield University women's field hockey team has been sent packing from the league. After eight seasons as an associate member of the Patriot League, the field hockey team's contract has been cancelled following the 2003 season, forcing the team to relocate to another athletic conference.
