Alex Roem ‘10, head of the Green Campus Initiative, is cutting down on her shopping.

She’s decided not to buy new clothes.  She re-uses clothes from thrift stores, and she finds handmade clothes on the internet, at sites like www.etsy.com.

There’s also handmade jewelry, housewares, and other “wonderful quirky little things” on etsy.  Alex is looking into dresses there, for senior week.

Alex is putting her defunct computer onto www.craigslist.com.  “People can reuse the screen and the keyboard.  It’s not just being thrown out.”  Apple has recycling programs.  They’ll even upcycle your old iPod.

Seniors don’t have to trash their old clothes, because many agencies collect them.  Goodwill, Salvation Army, Veterans, Dress for Success.

The entire interview with Alex Roem can be read on “The Reluctant Environmentalist.”
