I hate getting all emotional, but I truly am sad that this is my last column with iPhone Guy.

For the time that I’ve been BlackBerry Girl, I’ve truly learned a lot about Fairfield, writing, and most importantly, myself.

Ever since I was a child, all I’ve wanted to do was write. For fun, I used to write stories. Coolest kid on the block, I know. But that’s all I’ve ever loved to do. Though I excelled in other subjects in school, English was the only thing that I enjoyed going to everyday.

I didn’t have the most encouraging English teachers when I was in high school. Actually, English was my worst subject – always brought my whole average down. My teachers didn’t like the way I wrote, and I couldn’t seem to change my ways to fit their expectations. It was common to see AP exams and scribbles in red saying, “What are you trying to say?” and “Wrong format!” I started doubting my entire career path; maybe I wasn’t as great as my parents made me out to be.

Luckily, I listened to people that knew me, the girl behind the pen, and knew I’d never be happy doing anything else but writing.

These past four semesters have taught me a lot, but the thing that they have taught me the most is to not give up on your dreams, even if every person you know is standing with guns ready to shoot them down. Ready with reasons why you shouldn’t do what you love. The reasons why you shouldn’t are always weaker than the reasons why you should. No one’s major is better or worse than another person’s.

As an English major, I get a lot of rap for the fact that the journalism field is dying out. I hear it enough. If I really wanted to, I could change my major, but obviously my devotion to writing and to my dreams has me strapped into this field. Stop making fun of me because I’m not a business or science major. We’ll all be okay.

Yes, iPhone Guy and I are funny at times. Who am I kidding? We’re funny all the time.

But we really do care about our writing. We’ve received such a mix of positive and negative feedback for some of the topics we’ve written about, but that’s the beauty of being a writer. Freedom of speech! What other job allows you to type anything you feel, and not be told your wrong? It’s basically second best to being a weatherman, but I’m guessing that requires a lot of science.

We love being able to speak for students that are upset, or really enjoy something at Fairfield. And we’ll take the heat for our words, knowing we can’t get in much trouble for saying the truth.

I’ll part with some words of wisdom that I’ve learned through my years. And these are not only applicable to writing or school, but just life. Don’t hate on me for getting sappy. I know deep down, you’re all screaming in your mind that you love the words of encouragement I’m instilling in anyone that will listen.

One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from Mr. Albert Einstein, a man of science: “Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing its stupid.”

Every single one of us – no matter what race, religion, gender, or background we have – is born with a beautiful mind. We just tend to use it in different ways. In life, we keep on climbing till we get to the top, and although it feels like it’s a struggle, in the end, we have the view, and even better, the experience of the journey getting us there.

Until we meet again, yours truly.
