Many girls dream of being a princess when they are younger, but is it as glamorous in reality? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from their executive roles shows that life in a royal family may not be as it seems. According to Rolling Stone, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have stepped back and are no longer senior members of the royal family. With this decision comes many repercussions. The New York Times states that they will no longer be referred to as His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness, they will no longer receive money from the public for their ventures, Prince Harry will give up his title of captain general of the Royal Marines and they will no longer obtain public money from the Sovereign Grant. I believe that it is great that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are trying to start a life of their own for their family even with controversy that surrounds their decision.

This decision is a disappointing one for many people, but I believe they chose to do this because they had to. They now have to face a momentous amount of scrutiny from the public, as well as lose many privileges that come with the title they are leaving. There is a great amount of tabloid exposure that comes with being a part of the royal family, and having your life displayed in front of the world is not for everyone, which is a decision that people need to respect.

One great concern is that the couple has many charities that they are affiliated with, and according to the Washington Post, it is unknown if they will be able to “continue to support the queen and manage their charitable affiliations.” Even with the break from the royal family, these charities should be continued with the same effort as before the split. Meghan Markle is in charge of SmartWorks which is a charity that aids unemployed women, and Harry helps fund twenty other organizations. He also has created an organization called the Invictus Games which uses sports to support recovery and rehabilitation of wounded service members.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren’t disappearing entirely. The Washington Post reports that they will continue some royal duties, including making trips to different countries. They also report that Dickie Arbiter, the former press secretary to the queen, said that they still have some control of the “royal machine,” even though they are now slightly on the outside of it. This decision at the end of the day was about what was best for their family. Even though it creates lots of questions and controversy, it is a decision I believe we should all respect.
