Students and year round residents of the Fairfield Beach area are shaken by an early morning incident of gun fire on Wednesday outside of the Seagrape Bar.

An unidentified silver Mazda with tinted windows driven by a black male approached a group of students walking down Fairfield Beach Road near the Grape around 1 a.m. and after confronting them, pulled a gun out and fired five shots into the air before driving off, according to Fairfield Police spokesman Sgt. James Perez.

Fairfield police were called and were already in the vicinity and responded within a minute. Witnesses came forward to explain what had happened. A perimeter was set up and Perez said that several cars that matched the description were stopped and searched, but neither the person nor the weapon were found. Perez said they also used a thermal scanner to try and locate the weapon, but were unable to find it. Police continued searching the area until early in the morning and are still actively investigating, attempting to locate the car.

“We understand the neighborhood is upset and rightfully so,” Perez said. “We are not accustomed to seeing this or experiencing this type of thing.”

Teams of investigators are continuing to try and find the car or the individuals involved. Perez said that anyone who lives at the beach or was visiting the beach that may have any information on the incident should call the detectives at 203-254-4840.
