The Politics of Race, Class, and Gender class is throwing its third annual hip-hop block party on Monday, May 2 on the Oak Room patio.
The focus of the event is to involve the Fairfield community in a number of important issues prominent to members of the class. Groups are working on projects revolving around education, activism, language, gender, graduation, and drinking.
Each group is using aspects of hip-hop to address these important issues in a creative way. A graffiti board, rap battles, performances, and games are just a few examples of events that will be making up the block party.
The students in Dr. Jocelyn Boryczka’s class have studied hip-hop in a way that looks beyond the music genre to a social movement that forces people to acknowledge and address important issues. These students are using hip-hop in a similar way, as a voice for issues important to students at Fairfield.
Charlotte Adinolfi, a member of the class, stresses the importance of having events like this on campus.
“A project like this is so crucial to our University environment since students can get some insight into the work of other classes.”
