A bittersweet Wednesday evening marked the official passing of the torch to next year’s FUSA officers.
Jess DiBuono ’06 opened the Inauguration ceremony at Bellarmine Hall last Wednesday setting the tone by addressing the incoming FUSA team with encouraging words.
“I wish you all the best as you embark on what promises to be a great year,” she said. “I am happy for the opportunity I have had, but I know you will do such an amazing job.”
The incoming FUSA members were sworn in taking their oath of office and marking the official turn-over of power to new Chief Justice Elect Gregg Cerasuolo ’07, FUSA President Hutchinson Williams ’08, VP Megan McConville ’08 and inductees to the other FUSA offices.
Keeping with tradition, officers held up their right hands and swore to “uphold and defend the constitution of the Fairfield University Student Association and to serve the student body…to the best of my abilities.”
Williams spoke optimistically about the upcoming year while addressing the audience.
“Jess and FUSA set a tone, a foundation I wish to build off of,” he said. “I am truly humbled to be bestowed with this office. I promise to make it a great year and better the Fairfield community.”
Williams also promised to help relieve the problem of apathy on campus, and he particularly wants to instill more Stag pride into the student population.
University President Father von Arx attended and spoke at the Inauguration ceremony. He said he was excited about the opportunities and enthusiasm the new officers will bring to the Fairfield community.
“It is hard to say goodbye to Jessica and the graduating students. On the other hand, we have new wonderful student leaders,” von Arx said.
“I have known Hutch for several years, and I’m happy to work with him, I think he’ll do an excellent job engaging the student body and keeping me in touch with the student body. He’s got a great team,” said von Arx.
The new officers were also enthusiastic about the upcoming year.
“I’m excited because of the people I work with. I see only good things,” said new Chief Justice Gregg Cerasuolo.
New Chair of Senate P. Tim Rich ’08 summed up the general feeling of the evening.
“We’re ready to make our mark as a group.”
