After construction began over a year ago, three new dorms are almost completed on Fairfield University’s campus. By the end of August 2011, two new Senior/Junior dorms will be finished as well as a one Sophomore dorm in the quad.

Fairfield University administration decided to add more housing options for the student body as way to provide diversified types of on-campus housing as well as to eliminate the amount of forced triples assigned to incoming freshman.

“The whole point of building new living spaces as well as different types of buildings is student preference,” said Karen Donoghue, the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life.

For the rising sophomores of years to come, 70 McCormick Road was added to the quad. This new building will be part of the residential college program. This program aims to create a unified residential community based upon different Jesuit themes. 70 McCormick features traditional dorm style living and can house 132 students The building will have the theme of Service for Justice.

70 McCormick will be the second building on campus with a green roof (the first is Barone Campus Center) and the first with fill glass windows encompassing its lounges. There will be a common lounge and study room on every floor.

As for rising Juniors and Seniors, both 51 McInnes Road and Dolan Hall will be new options starting this upcoming fall. 51 McInnes Road, also referred to as “The Gateway to the East”, will be part of the Village. This residence hall will have apartment style housing available for 188 students. The apartments vary in size, each housing four, six or eight students. There will be six four-person apartments, 22 six-person apartments and four eight-person apartments.

Lastly, Dolan Hall was completely renovated this past year and will also provide apartment style housing for juniors and seniors in upcoming years. This building is on the East side of campus near the Health Center and Townhouses. Dolan will be able to house 140 students with three four-person apartments, eight six-person apartments and ten eight-person apartments.

Each one of the new residence halls will be brand new and create more housing options for next year as well as years to come.

“These buildings are going to be beautiful and we’re so fortunate to be adding them on this fall,” said Donoghue.
