The next time you attend a Fairfield game, notice the amount of excited children around you with their parents rooting for the Stags.

In response to the growing number of young fans in the stands, the Department of Athletics at Fairfield launched the Stag Kids Club this past August.

The program gives 4 to 12-year-olds the opportunity to get to know Fairfield players and coaches and win free gifts.

Activity sheets can be found on the Stag Kids Club Web site to download and complete, all featuring the Stag. When children bring the two completed activity sheets for their age group to one of the specified games of that particular month, they will receive a gift.

This month, the Kids Page home games are the September 24 women’s soccer game and the September 30 volleyball game. The first 125 kids who present the completed forms and membership cards will earn a Stag Kids memo board.

For the month of October, Stag Kids can look forward to a field hockey game and a men’s soccer game, both on October 22, when they will receive a free water bottle.

In November, the first 500 kids who attend the men’s and women’s basketball game will receive a free bobblehead. In addition, Santa Claus will be at the event to meet all Stag Kids members and take photos.

This month, children can also mail or e-mail entries in an essay and coloring contest. Contest winners will be announced during halftime of an undetermined men’s basketball game in December.

Children can also complete activity sheets for the month of December and present them at the swimming and diving meet on the December 9 for a free stadium cup.

“We normally do community outreach programs like clinics for kids in the area, and this is just an extension of that,” said Sports Information Director Jack Jones.

Jones added that opportunities for kids to meet the athletes and coaches will be planned as the season progresses, such as question and answer sessions and tours of the arena.

Most of the group plans are for the Web site, such as online chat sessions with coaches or athletes.

“We’re hoping to see the group continue to grow,” Jones said. The club currently has approximately 50 members.
