Elections for the Fairfield University Student Association are once again just around the corner, and it appears the cast of candidates for all offices this year is a diverse mix of interesting people.

As a campus media organization, The Mirror strives to be a watchdog for students to let them know how FUSA is performing. After all, $85 of every student’s $485 “General University Fee” goes to FUSA, so we all deserve to get our money’s worth. And despite an improved performance from FUSA this year, that does not seem to be the case.

Don’t get us wrong, it was great for FUSA to get Dave Chappelle last fall, and despite it not being 1996, Third Eye Blind is still a big name band. More so than Howie Day, at least.

Incidentally, The Mirror’s April 4, 2003 editorial criticizing FUSA mentioned the fact that Sacred Heart University got Dave Chappelle to perform last year, while a letter to the Editor a week later mentioned the fact that York College had Third Eye Blind perform. It is encouraging that FUSA appears to be open to constructive criticism.

More than just concerts, FUSA is meant to make a positive difference to student life at Fairfield. The power that FUSA wields is substantial, and it has the opportunity to fix some of the problems which students deal with every day. In addition to worrying about weekend programming, FUSA has the ability to truly champion student rights, make differences where there are injustices, and make all student life a little bit more smooth. Do they do this right now? We’re not so sure.

FUSA needs to get motivated. When prominent members of FUSA are quitting in protest and calling for reform, something clearly needs to be done. More importantly, now is the perfect time to do it. Kevin Neubauer has a great opportunity to actually fix the problems in FUSA, and with his re-election campaign starting next week, students have the chance to judge how well he has done so.
