In a time when photo finish elections may be something of the norm, the Fairfield University Student Association elections have become no different. Throngs of students rallied around their candidates Tuesday at the Barone Campus Center, creating an exciting and tense atmosphere until the final results were announced at just around 1 a.m. For creating this amount of tingle around an election, Tuesday’s candidates should be congratulated.

For the most part, candidates set a new precedent for student body elections, keeping mudslinging far away from their platforms and conducting themselves professionally. The Mirror would like to congratulate all candidates of the most recent election for their hard work, especially Karen Donoghue, who has sealed her own legacy as FUSA’s first female president.

However, The Mirror challenges FUSA’s incoming student representatives to set even higher standards for themselves throughout the next year by attempting to overcome the shortcomings of past administrations.

This year’s FUSA administration appears to be suffering from a severe case of Munich Syndrome. We are enforcing a policy of appeasement, both at the beach and on campus. We have not won back our beach rights and we have seen extensive changes made to our housing lottery, with even more change on the horizon. All of this has been done with little input from the student body.

So, The Mirror implores our new FUSA president to stop our policy of appeasement. Fight for our rights, both at the beach and at 1073 North Benson Road.

Our President-elect ran a campaign focusing on Fairfield pride. However, most students do not wear their pride on a sweatshirt or carry it like a ticket to a basketball game. Pride is found on the honor role and deans’ lists. Pride is seen in the hard working members of our great clubs and organizations. And pride is not only seen in the masses of students cheering at sporting events. Pride is found in all the students who strive to be the best, who want to be the best and demand the best from their student government.

The election is over. Now is the time for change to truly happen. Let’s change our status quo. Our new president has quite a task ahead of her. Get the beach back. Improve our programming. Make smoking in the dorms our choice. Give us a FUSA that is a true representative body working in the best interests of Fairfield students.

In short, Ms. Donoghue, make us proud.
