In light of recent violence and robberies surrounding Fairfield’s campus, all students must be reminded that we in fact do not live in our own isolated Fairfield bubble. We are a part of the real world, and we see its upsides and downsides as much as any other community.

About one year ago, Mark Fisher was killed in Brooklyn after a night of partying in New York City. If we can learn anything by the loss of Mark, it’s that we can’t take for granted that we’ll always be in safe surroundings. People must always be aware of their surroundings, no matter if they are in the middle of New York City or within minutes of Fairfield University.

This week four people were shot at Clubhouse Café in Bridgeport, one of whom is now in critical condition. This bar is frequented by Fairfield students, however luckily no Fairfield students were involved in this incident.

Just because you are out with Fairfield students doesn’t mean that you will be constantly surrounded by them. Maybe what can be learned from this incident is just because there is somewhere you can go doesn’t mean it’s somewhere you should go.

There have also been many robberies lately at the beach. Yet again, we are not surrounded by a Fairfield safety force field. We may know our neighbors and those in the houses that surround you, but there is no gate keeping outsiders from entering the beach area.

Robberies have been taking place when people aren’t at home, and when they are. Little things like locking our windows and doors when we leave the house, or even go to sleep, can do a lot to protect our belongings.

Robberies even take place closest to home, in the dorms and other on-campus housing. Every year laptops and other valuables are taken from rooms, mostly because students assume they are surrounded by Fairfield students, so they and their rooms are completely safe.

We shouldn’t be so paranoid that we do not enjoy our college years, we just need to be a little safer. College is still a part of life, and the real world has its perils that we cannot avoid simply because we’re in suburban Fairfield.

Always go out with at least one friend, be aware of your surroundings, and locking doors and windows can prevent aggravation, and in some cases, disaster.
