To the Editor:

In last week’s issue of The Mirror, I was surprised to find an attack against Michael Bond’s writing. Ironically, this letter followed Dean Reed’s call to raise the bar on the content contained in The Mirror. Personally, I am a big fan of the newspaper, though I have to acknowledge that it does not encompass events that occur outside the Fairfield community. To me, Mr. Bond’s writing is usually the only thing that helps this paper extend past our suburban bubble and address more worldly issues.

As he seems to be sincerely acute in handling political issues, I believe it would be a disservice to both the readers of The Mirror and Mr. Bond himself to ask him to write on topics for which he lacks passion. Mr. Bond’s ability to inflect true emotion, though it may not always be cheerful, into his pieces prove that he is emotionally committed to what he writes.

However, I do not think it is fair to assume that his anger over a political system he does not support represents his overall “outlook on life.” Contrarily, embedded in his writing seems to be an idealistic hope that eventually things will change. As such, it seems likely that Mr. Bond may have a hidden affection for small furry animals – as long as they agree with him politically. Either way, I hope to continue reading Mr. Bond’s writing, and I believe any change to his format would seriously disappoint his many readers.

Sincerely,

Christine Johnson ’05
