To the Editor:
I do agree with Mr. Bond in a recent editorial that we should personally choose where we want to shop. Yes, I prefer the local hardware store to Home Depot. But I have the choice.
What really gets me upset is when small towns pack their zoning boards with local political hacks to stop smart and well-managed business like Wal-Mart from being successful. That is hindering fair trade. Let’s look at it as “pro-choice.”
The consumer does the voting and has overwhelmingly chosen Wal-Mart. Now that they have grown into the world’s largest company, Wal-Mart is under incredible scrutiny.
To believe Wal-Mart knowingly hires illegal immigrants to work in their stores directly or through third party contractors is very naive.
It is not worth the government intervention or the bad press you are perpetuating in this article.
Let’s also not forget the benefits that Wal-Mart brings to the community, like increased real estate taxes to build schools and yes, employment (we do have the right to decide where we work the last time I looked).
All I ask of zoning boards, journalists and human rights activists is to give me the “right to choose” without government intervention. I will bet Wal-Mart will win every time.
Free enterprise is a wonderful thing and we have brave men and women dying every day to protect it.
Sincerely,
