The Bush administration has publicly interpreted the recent United Nations resolution as authorizing the use of force should Iraq fail to comply with weapons inspections.

George W. Bush has said, ” if we have to go to war, we will.” However, is this just a son trying to avenge Papa Bush’s blow during Desert Storm?

Fabulous. As the United States is finally beginning to regain some sense of post-9/11 strength and identity, we might be preparing for war.

Secretary of State Colin Powell is quoted by CNN as saying that if Saddam Hussein does not comply with the weapons disarmament, then the United States will forcefully make him comply, even if the U.N. does not authorize the use of force.

This is even better. As if the United States is not already a hated nation throughout the globe. As if the United States does not have internal problems of its own. And who needs oil? I’m sure the electric cars will come in handy. This way, we’d be saving the ozone layer as we cut off the Middle East from lucrative oil revenue. Why does the United States have to be peacekeepers of the world?

You know, I respected Bush as he stood at Ground Zero and said to the plethora of rescue workers and the American people that it didn’t matter if we could hear him, but he could hear us. That is a history book worthy speech. But to have the power to act without the U.N.? Is that a respectable leader or just a son trying to fight the war that his father never did? Are we going to respect Bush for his leadership during this crisis as we did with the 9/11 attacks?

Already in the region, including the Persian Gulf, Central Asia and Africa, there are upwards of 60,000 troops, according to MSNBC.

A wildly circulated Pentagon report estimated that 200,000 or 250,000 American troops from all branches of the armed services will be required.

Let’s kill some more of Uncle Sam’s boys. As if the troops haven’t undergone enough during the height of the search for Al Qaeda and Osama, we send them right back in to fight another battle, this one perhaps even involving the use of chemical warfare by Hussein.

Do we really believe that Hussein will comply? I mean, we couldn’t stop him in Persian Gulf, so what makes us think that we are going to be able to stop him now? I just hope that the United States really understands the possible ramifications, the lives that will be lost, the strain that it will put on the home front that has already seen their strength and resilience tested before.

Will the United States once again band together and proudly display their flags? Will the residents of the 50 states once again wear the yellow ribbons, don the Patriotic garb and listen to the songs that lyrically tell us that we are proud to be Americans? Will young men run to sign up for the military as they did post 9/11? Will we support our president’s cause?

More importantly, will any nation come to our aid if we do in fact go to war? Or will the United States stand-alone as our Commander-In-Chief leads us into uncertain battle?

I salute you, Mr. President. Your strength astounds me. It must be hard waking up each morning knowing that soon you could be one of the most despised men in America.
