The holidays are a time when people get together and celebrate. There is always uplifting music in the air and people seem a little bit nicer. This is a time, most would agree, to look forward to.

I, however, think that the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas should be feared and avoided at all costs. The holidays, I am talking about the religious ones that happen around December, were not designed with the college student in mind. Presents, cards, decorations, they all cost money and, depending on your friends, a lot of money. So instead of going shopping and reaching deep into your “social activities fund,” just be creative and remember that there is no greater gift than giving the gift you got last year. Even better, give them the one you made/borrowed this year.

Remember when you were little and you would make your Mom or Dad a hand-made card for their birthday? Who says you can’t do that now for the holidays? They will probably love it because they believe you are showing them your sensitive side that they thought was long gone. If they don’t like it, who cares because they can’t tell you that, they’re your parents.

As for your girlfriend or boyfriend, why spend the time and more importantly money on a gift when you can just steal something from your brother or sister to give to them? You’re helping get two gifts out of the way. Your sister won’t have to give you anything any more and now your girlfriend is taken care of as well. If you don’t have a brother or sister, wait till after the holidays and give them the unisex gift for ages 18-24 that you got at the Yankee Swap. After all, what’s more romantic than Pepperidge Farm meats and cheeses?

So this year don’t waste your time going shopping for anyone. Just give your loved one the gift of creativity. Don’t worry, I am sure they’ll love it.
