The time to register for classes is once again drawing near, and as it does, some of Fairfield’s commuters may be wondering, “Will I get into the classes I need or want to take?” If you are a full-time student, the answer is, yes, probably. Part-time commuters, however, may feel a strain on their schedules when trying to get into courses.

“There aren’t any special accommodations for scheduling for commuter students,” said Robert Russo of the Registrar’s Office. “Any part-time students can register for night courses first and for day courses after the full-time students register.”

Registering for classes works in this way: Presidential and Fellows Scholars are given priority, as are seniors and those who need specific courses to complete their majors. Students with time-constraints, such as varsity athletics, are accommodated as well. After this, priority is given based upon the year of the student.

Although some part-time students have found this system inconvenient, most encounter few, if any, problems getting into courses and working around their personal schedules.

“I didn’t have any trouble with scheduling,” said Marilynn Iorofino, a part-time student at Fairfield. “I actually registered for this class a week before it began. It may be difficult to arrange classes with hectic work or family agendas, but getting around this obstacle is the job of the student, not the university.”

Kathy Porto, ’03, a Presidential Scholar, gets preference, even though she is a commuter. “I’m so lucky that I have this scholarship because I would be screwed if I didn’t,” said Porto. “I wouldn’t have time off-campus to get things done because my schedule would be so sporatic.”
