What are your thoughts on the complaint that there is a lack of diversity in Oscar nominees?

Rachelle Brunn-Bevel, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology: “I am disappointed, but not surprised by the 2016 Oscar nominations. The film industry has a major problem with lack of diversity. I am not only referring to racial-ethnic diversity. Consider gender diversity for example. According to the Los Angeles Times, the number of major studio films directed by women in most years is less than 10 percent. The first woman won the Academy Award for best director in 2010. According to a 2012 Los Angeles Times study, Oscar voters are approximately 94 percent white and 77 percent male. This is out of sync with the movie-going public and might help to explain why actors of color were not nominated in 2015 or 2016.”
