Two weeks ago, the Fairfield baseball team was 3-0 in MAAC play.

Now, after several offensive woes, the Stags are 4-5.

Last weekend, Fairfield dropped its three-game conference series with St. Peter’s, scoring only three runs.

“Right now, in the last three, four games, our hitting’s awful, top to bottom,” said Head Coach John Slosar.

Nowhere was the sputtering offense more apparent than in Saturday’s doubleheader, when Fairfield lost 8-1 and 4-2.

Junior Peter Allen continued to shoulder the offensive load, notching three of Fairfield’s nine hits on the day.

While sophomore Dave Brizzolara and junior Albie DeSimone have also swung the bat well, the same cannot be said for the rest of the lineup.

In Monday’s 1-0 loss, senior Ed Kamintzky pitched an eight-inning gem but received no run support.

Allen summed up the offensive dearth.

“We didn’t get hits at big times whenever we had guys on base. We made unproductive outs-strikeout, popout-and we weren’t able to score runs as a result of that,” he said.

Going forward, Allen said that clutch hitting is what the team needs to work on the most.

Slosar said that on the whole, the defense is improving and that it was not a “major factor” this weekend.

In game one, Fairfield junior Ryan Calabrese, who pitched solidly his last two outings, did not have his best stuff and got tagged with the loss.

In 5 2/3 innings, Calabrese allowed eight runs, seven of them earned, on 10 hits. The loss is Calabrese’s second in conference play this year.

In the bottom of the first, Allen drove in the only run of the day on a double to center.

The second game was much closer. The Stags jumped ahead 2-0 in the second, only to give it right back, surrendering three in the third.

“The pitching’s fine for the most part. We’ve been pretty consistent for the first two MAAC series,” said Kamintzky.

Despite the offensive struggles, Allen said he thinks the Stags can turn things around.

“There’s a lot of talent on this team,” said Allen. “It’s just a matter of everyone coming together offensively and getting the pitching we’ve been getting.”
