After an extremely successful five-year tenure at Fairfield, Director of Athletics Gene Doris announced this evening that Ed Cooley will be accepting the head coach position at Providence College.

Cooley set school records for overall and conference wins this past season. Fairfield also won the MAAC regular season championship for the first time in 25 years.

While Cooley was head coach, the teams win total increased year by year and his commitment to rebuilding the program yielded outstanding results.

Among numerous accolades and awards, Cooley led the Stags to post-season wins the past two years. This includes last week’s NIT victory over Colorado State as well as the biggest comeback in NCAA post-season history against George Mason in 2010.

After the firing of Keno Davis, this was the opportune time for Providence to approach Cooley, a Rhode Island native.

Nevertheless, the Fairfield community will miss the passion that Cooley exemplified every game of every season. The way Cooley transferred his energy to the fans during pivotal game situations was inspiring and is something rarely seen in collegiate sports today.

The Mens Basketball program is stronger than ever and Fairfield fans have Ed Cooley to thank for that.
