After a tumultous two weeks sage, the long, strange journey of senior point guard Jonathan Han finally ended Monday with his formal resignation. Fairfield Athletics issued a press release on Monday afternoon revealing that the senior guard has decided to leave the men’s basketball team for personal reasons and will not play the remainder of the season.
Han was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 29, two days after an alleged post-game altercation between Han and assistant coach Brian Blaney following a game against’ Manhattan. At the time, the suspension was temporarily indefinite, citing a violation of team policy. Han has not played since that game.
‘
The statement added, ‘After taking time to examine the situation further, Han decided not to return for the final five regular season games or any post-season play.’
Ironically, Han finishes his career as one of the most storied guards in program history. Statistically, he finishes his Fairfield career with 1,072 points and 526 assists in 110 games. Han’s assist total his the third-highest in program history.
‘I appreciate what Jon has done for the Fairfield University men’s basketball program,’ head coach Ed Cooley said in the press release. ‘We will continue to support Jon with his academic goal of earning a degree from Fairfield University.’
Han is now the third player to leave the team during this season, joining freshman Brandon Davis, who never was able to play for the Stags due to injury and decided he would like to transfer closer to home and junior Rob Sisca, a transfer from Vermont who played sparingly this season and then decided he no longer wanted to play basketball.
According to sources in the Fairfield Athletic department, Han will remain a student at Fairfield University and will be afforded the academic support services available to all student athletes for the remainder of the school year. Original speculation cited that Han would leave the school and pursue a professional basketball career in Puerto Rico. That, for the moment, appears to be inaccurate.
