The men’s soccer team suffered through a third-straight disappointing weekend by splitting the two MAAC games it played. Head Coach Carl Rees is not known to make excuses for his team’s struggles, but with the amount of injuries this season, he has every right to.

“I think we are all a little disappointed regarding the weekend,” said Rees. “We are deep into our squad through injuries now with six starters out and we are on our third goalkeeper of the season. It represents a challenge for us.”

Fairfield picked up a 1-0 victory against Siena on Friday night in New York. Freshman Erik Illisje scored his first career goal in his first start of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Cleveland made five saves to record his third shutout of the season.

The Stags played on Sunday at Marist without starting goalkeeper J.P. Francini ’08, midfielders David Piedrahita ’10, Christian Uy ’10 and Matthew Uy ’11, forward Todd Rutledge ’11, and defender Tom Clements ’09.

Fairfield fell behind early, allowing four goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Stags could not rebound and lost Cleveland to an injury in at the end of the first half. Freshman Jordan Bar took over for him and became the Stags’ third goalkeeper of the season.

The Stags return to action for their final game of the season against Iona on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lessing Field.
