After nearly 30 years of coaching at All Hallows High School in the Bronx, N.Y., John Carey made the move to the collegiate ranks last week by joining Fairfield’s basketball coaching staff.

Carey replaces Andy Buzzbee, ’00, who resigned in June after two years as an assistant at Fairfield.

Carey was unable to be reached by The Mirror for comment, but told the New York Post on October 28, that it was difficult to leave All Hallows where he coached since 1976.

“It was a hard decision,” Carey told the Post. “Anytime you consider a big change it is. But sometimes change is good.”

Head coach Tim O’Toole said the team is excited to have Carey join the coaching staff.

“He brings a tremendous amount of basketball knowledge to our program,” O’Toole said. “We have a great group of kids to work with so his insights will make us much better of a team.”

Carey, a former teammate of Fairfield Director of Athletics Eugene Doris at Archbishop Molloy, plans to continue teaching at All Hallows.

Despite numerous attempts, The Mirror was unable to contact Doris, who is traveling with the men’s soccer team to the MAAC Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Carey joins the Fairfield basketball program at its most uncertain time. The investigation continues into allegations made by former Fairfield players against the coaching staff and a booster close to the program.

Buzzbee, who was the third Fairfield assistant to leave the program within a calendar year, was accused of playing a major role in the falsification of a drug test and academic fraud last season, according to Oscar Garcia ’03.

Buzzbee’s resignation, however, was a personal decision according to O’Toole. Buzzbee completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration in July, and moved back to his native Pennsylvania where he got married in August.

O’Toole said the Stags will miss Buzzbee, but looks forward to the program’s continued improvement this year.

“We are very grateful to have had Andy […] we will miss him greatly,” O’Toole said. “We are excited toward the season and we need to build on many of the positive things that we did last year.”
