In a heartbreaking loss, Rider, now 7-2, defeated Fairfield in a game that went into overtime. Although Fairfield ultimately lost 2-3, the Stags played a terrific game right until the very end.

The loss marks a six game losing streak as Fairfield dropped to 2-8 for the season which puts them 0-1 in the Northeast Conference.

“We played with a lot of heart” said head coach Jackie Kane after the game. “We have been working all week on our passes and I think we made some really great connections this game.”

It was obvious from Fairfield’s first goal that the team had been working on their passing, their movement down the field was executed very well and they created a lot of opportunities because of it.

“Our intensity was amazing” said Caitlin Quinn ’07. Her thoughts were echoed by teammate and fellow senior Courtney O’Connor, ” We had a lot more of an offensive push this game”

Fairfield led early in the first half as Emily Janis ’09 scored off of a pass from Brittany Bates ’09. Rider answered quickly with a goal of their own and ultimately took the lead off of a corner penalty shot.

In the second half, Fairfield was once again on the offensive by scoring off of a corner penalty shot early in the second half which tied the game at two goals a piece. Despite both teams putting in a solid effort to break the tie in regulation, the game went into overtime.

Rider wasted no time in sudden death as they scored within the first three minutes.

A statement made by Courtney O’Connor 07, sums up the abrupt ending to such an exciting game, “The loss was hard but someone had to win”.

Fairfield finishes their three game home stretch on Sunday at 1p.m. against Columbia University.
