Fairfield University has over 100+ student organizations that offer a variety of subjects in which students are interested. The club offerings have a wide variety including topics such as culture, politics, academics, sports, media, health, business, religion and more!
Joining a club allows students to explore their passions in new ways. Fairfield’s student body is driven by a desire to serve the community, meet new people, and discover uncharted interests.
This week, I interviewed students who are members of The Broadcasting Club, one of the many media and publication clubs on campus, to learn more about their passions for radio and how the club operates.
The radio station “WVOF 88.5” is an organization giving students the opportunity to have their voices heard within the Fairfield community. There are different sects within the Broadcasting Club that include radio, podcasts and sports broadcasting. The Broadcasting Club does not have meeting requirements and is based on members’ flexibility.
Sophomore Trip Pisano is a new member of the Broadcasting Club and has already had awesome opportunities within the club. As a Communications major with a focus on Sports Media and Marketing, this club has catered well to the field he wishes to pursue. When asked about his participation in the club, he stated “Our schedule revolves around most of the sporting games but you can be involved as much or as little as you want. It’s been great so far and I’m excited to see where I go within the club.”
Pisano’s main focus within the club is sports broadcasting. He explained, “I signed up to commentate games, doing graphics and camera work for the games which is awesome.” Since September, Pisano has already accomplished play-by-play for men’s soccer games, television scorecard graphics for women’s field hockey as well as camera footage for women’s volleyball games.
Sophomore Logan Runde, promoted to Assistant Sports Director last May, has been an active club member since his freshman year. Runde and Pisano work closely together within the Sports Broadcasting sect of the club. When asked about his position Runde stated, “My main jobs within the club are to communicate with the Division 1 athletics department, interview Fairfield student-athletes, coaches, and members of the Fairfield community, and broadcast the majority of our Division 1 athletics as a play-by-play broadcaster.”
Runde also discussed how this club goes beyond just your interests but helps students step out of their comfort zones. He states, “I enjoy the club because I can get real-world experience in the field of Sports Media and the opportunity for students to grow their confidence and skills in the industry.”
Fairfield University’s Broadcasting Club gives real-world experiences to students looking to work in the media, radio, and podcasting fields of work. Whether it is a passion, wanting to learn valuable skills, or just trying to have fun, the Broadcasting Club lets students come together to share interests in creating content they enjoy. This club is a great extracurricular to build your resume if you are preparing to be in the fields of Media and Communication!
