The red carpet rolled out and students arrived ready to cheer for their favorite contender at the Mr. Fairfield pageant.
On Thursday, April 27 contestants kicked off the pageant in Gonzaga’s auditorium with a choreographed dance number to “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” that would have put *NSYNC to shame.
Five dorms were represented in the pageant. After competing at an earlier time for the position as their dorm’s delegate, the pageant’s contestants included, John McGrath of Loyola, Dan Toplitt of Dolan, Joe Sullivan of Campion, Pete Vratimos of Jogues, Jonathan Angelucci of Regis and Marcello DePascale, also of Regis.
Angelucci of Regis took the crown as Mr. Fairfield, followed by Mr. Jogues, who was named first runner up, and Mr. Dolan as second runner up.
The dorms that were not included in the pageant did not have volunteers, according to IRHA members. For this reason Regis was permitted two contestants.
“We couldn’t decide between the two,” said Dan Gorman, a Regis RHA member.
Evening wear was the first section of the competition. The men graced the stage dressed to the nines in clothing ranging from suites to a low-cut black dress worn by Mr. Jogues.
As contestants walked across the stage, information was read about each person by the hosts.
Mr. Dolan, “likes looking sexy and playing baseball in really tight pants,” read one of the hosts.
Beachwear opened with Angelucci of Regis sporting a Speedo. Next, Mr. Jogues walked on stage in a robe which he later dropped, revealing short, red shorts with “FU” written on the backside.
The talent portion was the final section. Mr. Loyola chose to play the drums and didn’t hesitate to stand up and shake his booty while playing. At a heightened moment in his performance he threw his sticks aside and continued to play with his hands. He finished the set blinded by his hat pulled over his eyes as the crowd cheered him on.
Mr. Campion played a Latin-influenced melody on the saxophone and DePascale of Regis performed a song with his band that he and his cousin wrote.
In the concluding moments of the competition, the contestants were asked to answer a final question. Some used this opportunity to get a laugh out of the crowd.
When asked, Angelucci of Regis stated that his idol is his mother.
“She’s strong and promotes world peace,” he said.
When Mr. Dolan was asked who the one person in the world he could pick to meet was, he responded, “Myself as someone else.”
Mr. Campion’s answer to his final question was followed by an “aww” from the ladies in the crowd.
“I don’t think I can choose (one person to be stuck in an elevator with) because there are so many lovely ladies out there,” he said.
In reaction to winning the title of Mr. Fairfield, Angelucci said, “I was surprised and excited … I was nervous about dancing. The song was so long I thought I was going to pass out.”
Fans of each contestant came to cheer their friends on.
“I was representing Pete [Vratimos],” said Joe Miraglia ’09.
While his friendship was his reason for going, Miraglia said, “It was going to be a good event no matter what.”
Kym Guadalupe ’09, who went to cheer on DePascale of Regis said, “The pageant was wonderful and entertaining.”
