Older siblings are looked upon to guide the way. They are the ones who go to high school and college first, and are able to tell you about it. They give you advice and help guide you in the decisions you make, one of them possibly being your decision to come to Fairfield.
Sometimes it may seem like an entire family wants to join in on the fun.
More and more siblings are being found at Fairfield, dressed in Stag gear.
“Fairfield is in my family. My older sister, Caitlin [’03], went here and some of my cousins, as well,” said Maggie O’Connor ’10, whose sister Erin O’Connor ’07 also attends the University.
When asked “Why Fairfield?” Emma Williams ’10, sister of FUSA President Hutch Williams, said, “I always came for Sibling Weekend and was surprised at how friendly everyone was.”
Every year, Fairfield hosts a weekend that is devoted to students and their brothers and sisters. This year Sibling Weekend falls on March 2.
Hutch Williams said that he, “knew this was a good fit for Emma, but didn’t push her to go.”
Both freshmen, Williams and O’Connor, said that they were not pushed by their brothers, sisters or family to go to Fairfield. Each said that it was their personal decision, and that Fairfield was the university they wanted to attend.
“I wanted to be close to home and was extremely nervous about breaking away from home. It was a win-win situation, because I know there’s someone here,” said Williams.
Research on this subject contradicts the myth that siblings find it annoying to have their brother or sister in close proximity for extended periods of time.
“My sisters had the time of their lives here,” said O’Connor. “They were always talking about how much fun they had. It was so nice whenever I visited: the people were nice, and the atmosphere of the campus was welcoming. I couldn’t wait to come here.”
O’Connor emphasized how great it was having a sister in the same school, “[Erin] helps me run errands. She has a car and, if I ever get homesick, she’s right here.”
The connections to the world of upperclassmen and the bouts of homesickness all become easier to deal with when you have family on campus.
Having a sibling at Fairfield seems to be an all-around success.
