Columbus Day Weekend was a time for relaxation for many students at Fairfield, but for the Fairfield athletes, it was a busy, and successful, weekend.

Men’s Soccer: High Five

The men’s soccer team continued its unbeaten streak, stretching it to five games. On Friday night the Stags traveled to Marist (4-5-1, 0-2 MAAC) and came away with a 3-1 victory. Goals came from senior Christian Uy, junior Erik Ilisje and sophomore Jack Burridge. On Sunday, the Stags made the trip farther north in New York to face Siena (5-5-2, 0-1-1). Trailing 1-0 in the 84th minute, junior Jack Cleverley struck with his first goal of the season, heading the ball into the corner of the net off a cross from Todd Rutledge to tie the game. The score would remain 1-1 as neither team could score in overtime. Freshman goalkeeper Michael O’Keeffe allowed just two goals on the weekend. The Stags are now 5-4-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in MAAC play.

Women’s Soccer: Bouncing Back

Following a five-game winning streak, the women’s soccer team endured a five-game winless streak, until this past weekend. The Stags had their first full MAAC weekend of the season, traveling to Saint Peter’s (3-11-1, 1-5 MAAC) and Manhattan (5-7-2, 1-3-2 MAAC). On Friday night against the Peahens, sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Boudreau made seven saves in a 3-0 shutout. Goals came from Adrienne Boyer, Jasmien Corniel, and Spenser Allaway. On Sunday morning against the Jaspers, Boudreau again came up big, recording three saves and allowing just one goal in an overtime contest, but the Stags offense could also only put one goal past Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis. That goal came off the foot of Boyer, who converted the rebound of a Nicole Cavallaro shot. Corniel now has eight goals on the season, putting her four behind MAAC-leading Sylvia Kowalski of Canisius. The Stags are now 2-1-2 in the MAAC and 7-7-1 overall.

Volleyball: Mann…Mann…Mann…

For the third week in a row, senior middle blocker Katie Mann earned MAAC Player of the Week honors. Mann, the lone senior on this year’s squad, led the Stags to victories over MAAC foes Siena and St. Peter’s, both at home in Alumni Hall. The wins moved the Stags to 7-1 in the MAAC and 9-10 overall, giving them sole possession of first place in the conference. Siena has defeated the Stags in the MAAC Final in four consecutive seasons, a streak the Stags will look to break in November in Buffalo.

Mann averaged 4.57 kills on a .379 hitting percentage and 5.43 points per set. Mann is now one of only two Stags to record 350 or more total blocks in her career, as well as recording 1,200 career kills. She has played in all 413 sets since her freshman year and is second all time in school history in kills.
