First, I’d like to start with this disclaimer: I do realize that this school does not have a football team and many students reading this column may not know what football is…that’s ok. Just continue along reading this article in class as you normally do on Thursday, chuckling to yourself and shaking your head at your neighbor while mumbling, “Oh, that Meaghan Donlon…she is too much.” Ok, great.
This Sunday, Peyton Manning will take time out of his busy endorsement schedule to play in the Super Bowl. The next Dan Marino will face off against the Bears in South Florida for Super Duper Bowl XLI, and millions of Americans will sit down in front of the tube to drink, eat, and yell for a few hours.
Do I honestly care about the outcome of this game? No. Not at all really. I’m not going to pretend to be one of those girls who knows a lot about football. However, growing up just outside of Boston and being part of a very sports-minded family has taught me this:
1. Boston has had, and will always have, some of the best teams in sports, but will undoubtedly always draw the short end of the stick. One-sided refs, unforeseeable injuries, and just all around bad luck have continued to plague our Boston teams for years. Basically, being a sports fan in Boston is like being in an abusive relationship, and you have to brace yourself to be let down at any moment.
2. When our team is down, you walk away and leave the men folk alone. One moment they may be rejoicing and vowing to name their first born “Brady,” but this does not mean you can sit back and relax. You must remain on high alert. This is a very sensitive situation and at any moment a fumble or interception could turn your guy friends/dad/brothers/uncles etc. into an angry mob, ready to march down to Foxboro and burn the place to the ground.
3. (Possibly the most important point here) When you take into consideration salary caps that didn’t exist during the prime of other dynasties, like the Cowboys, the New England Patriots are the best football team ever. Yes, ever. No, I’m not biased because I’m from Boston. These are facts people. So yes, we will win the Super Bowl next year. Yes, I will be getting my number 12 tattoo on my left butt cheek as planned. Yes, I do still plan to name my first born child Asante Troy Tedy Donlon-Brady regardless of whether I have a boy or a girl.
So in conclusion, I’m going to have to go with the Bears on this one, because I’m from Boston and that’s how I roll.
