Carl Gustafson was a member of The Mirror from 1978 to 1982, fulfilling the roles of Arts and Entertainment Editor and later Editor-in-Chief.

During his tenure, the staff grew from 25 to over 125 members. Gustafson classified his team’s collective experience, which included receiving a first-class award as a free press, as “a lot of fun.”

After graduation, Gustafson continued his education and earned a degree from Antioch University in 2000.

Within the professional realm, he has worked in human services since 1989. Notably, he ran crisis teams within three different outpatient abuse programs and helped to start the first batterers’ treatment program on Cape Cod.

His tireless commitment to his community is matched by his athleticism, as Gustafson is the first person on Cape Cod to run a marathon in all fifty states and has completed two full Ironman events.

Gustafson upholds the Jesuit tradition of service, seeking “like-minded people” to assist in the collection of over $100,000 in donations for non-profit organizations.

Today, Gustafson answers to the name “Dr. G” as a psychologist based in Mashpee, MA.

Q&A:

1.) What is your fondest memory at The Mirror?

We had so many wonderful experiences.  I think that having the experience of increasing the staff so dramatically to over 125 people in my time as Editor-in-Chief was the best.  We had so many people involved in helping out!  We won a First Class Award as a free press.  We were able to write responsible journalism as free thinkers in the context of a college.

2.) How did your time at The Mirror shape your post-grad experiences?

I went to Radcliffe’s Publishing Procedures Program and obtained a job in hardcover book publishing at Putnam’s in New York City.  I did that as my first job.  I still write to this day but only for personal pleasure.

3.) What are you up to now?

I am a psychologist.  I do neuropsychological testing and go by “Dr. G.”

4.) What advice would you give to current members of The Mirror?

Share your love of “wanting to know” with others.  Use it to get great stories.  Life is a beautiful journey.  I am still great friends with many Mirror Alumni.  You are living during one of the best times of your life!
