After another year of 27 successful issues, the 33rd Editorial Board of The Mirror will step up to publish its first issue. This one.
Upper management includes four dedicated females, under the guidance of Editor in Chief Stephanie Lauto ’08, who was the former news copy editor and associate news editor.
Lauto will be joined by Executive Editor Christina Stoddard ’08, formerly the assistant managing editor; Managing Editor Jess Mitchell, formerly the online news editor; and Assistant Managing Editor Alexandra Gross ’09, last year’s assistant commentary editor.
“This year’s staff is, without any question, extremely talented and enthusiastic,” said Ben Doody ’07, the outgoing Editor in Chief. “Every staffer has had at least one year of experience, and Steph and her staff have a unique opportunity to take The Mirror to the next level.”
Lauto said she is excited about the upcoming year after having received extensive training from her predecessors.
“I will assume my position as Editor in Chief with a great advantage, having worked with Ben and Mari,” she said. “I’ve learned more under their leadership in the past year than I could have ever expected.”
Lauto also said she has great confidence in the new staff.
“The staff members were hand-picked for their special journalistic abilities and for the dedication they show week after week – even on those late Tuesday nights,” she said.
Many of the new section editors are abroad, including News Editor Ali Bart ’08, Associate News Editor Kate McGann ’08, Campus Life Editor Lesley Almeida ’08, Online News Editor Maura Rousseau ’08 and Photography Editor Katie McCarthy ’08.
All have contributed greatly in the past and will eagerly return to The Mirror next year. Until then, new assistant section editors will step up to design and edit their sections.
Commentary Editor Andrew Chapin ’09, Sports Editor Tom Cleary ’10 and Entertainment Editor Marie Montgomery ’08 have already assumed their roles as section editors.
A wealth of assistants will join the section editors. including Joe Carretta ’10 and Keri Harrison ’10 in News; Christopher Haliskoe ’10 in Commentary; Veronica Florentino ’10, Jack McNamara ’10, Lily Norton ’10, and J.P. Porretta ’10 in Entertainment; Mary McCall ’09 and Meghan Schelzi ’10 in Campus Life; and Mary Therese Church ’08, Frank Romano ’10, Chris Simmons ’10, and James Thompson ’08 in Sports.
The photo department will also be headed by three exceptional photographers, Lorraine Lampe ’08, Katie McCarthy ’08 and Elyse Raby ’08, who will direct new staff photographer Jon Ollwerther ’10.
Robin Merritt ’09 will assume the role of Commentary and Campus Life copy editor, a role formerly held by Rosanne Khoury ’08.
Khoury will assist Rousseau as assistant online news editor in addition to online copy editor in the upcoming year.
As Timo Wilson ’09 enriches the Commentary section with his creative cartoons, stories from new staff writer Katie Barry ’08 will grace the news pages from week to week.
Highly recommended by last year’s online staff, Bill Klump ’08 will become managing editor of the Web edition.
Keith Connors ’10 will be the new online sports editor, as the sports section has grown immensely to include a variety of online content.
The new staff has been undergoing training for the past two weeks in preparation for this week’s premier issue.
“I couldn’t possibly be more impressed with the new staff and with the great potential it brings to the table,” Doody said. “I know I am leaving The Mirror in very capable hands.”
