What can you say about the Athena Diner? Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the Athena is the best place around. Whether you have a hazy craving for a feta cheese omelet and a Manhattan, or a grilled cheese sandwich and Heineken, the Athena is the answer. To any student at Fairfield University, the Athena Diner is an institution, and for good reason. Many a hectic weekend night will be accompanied by a trip there to rest and recuperate. Marathon study sessions are broken up by suggestions like “Dude, I need to take a break. Let’s go to the Athena.” Although the normal diner fare at the Athena is superlative, they also offer delicious dinner entrees. My personal favorite is Fettuccine Carbonara, a dish of pasta with Alfredo sauce, ham and broccoli. The wait staff is courteous and affable, and everyone has a good time when they go to the Athena.
The Worst: Penny’s
Quick true story about Penny’s Diner: once, I found glass in my food there. Evidently, somebody in the kitchen dropped a plate and one of the pieces found its way into my scrambled eggs. Sure, they paid for my meal, but I think it’s needless to say that I never returned. Penny’s is only populated by townies, kids from Fairfield High, and freshmen who have yet to be enlightened by the Athena. Their prices are way too high, their service isn’t very good, and their food is terrifying. What’s worse, they don’t have jukeboxes in the booths like at the Athena. Call me old fashioned, but when I’m eating an omelet at four in the morning, I like to listen to a little A Perfect Circle. In fact, the only good thing about Penny’s is the fact that it’s extremely close to campus, but in the end, the Athena is more than worth the trip.
