To the Editor:
Although I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Cota’s gripping story about the social networking Web site phenomenon that is The Facebook [“Nearly one year later, FU weighs Facebook pros and cons,” The Mirror, Sept. 22], there was one particular passage which made me feel quite faint!
While addressing the legitimate privacy questions that the Facebook poses, Cota’s first member on her list of possible identity-thieving individuals are Fairfield alumni! The very first!
Cota writes that, “[m]any college alumni can obtain e-mail addresses from their alma maters,” and that, as alumni, our “breaking into the site is feasible.”
Speaking as an alumnus, I was outraged! “Breaking in” in order to access the Facebook community? May I remind all of you that, although I graduated from Fairfield University, I am not some vagabond ne’er-do-well. I did no breaking in whatsoever to become part of the vast Facebook community. I merely was asked my University-issued e-mail address, which I provided. I assure you that any sketchiness which I have taken part in on the Facebook was done as a member of the Fairfield community – itself no stranger to sketchiness. As I’m sure members of the class of 2005 can attest, the joys and benefits of a Facebook account do not disappear after Fairfield’s commencement ceremonies.
I ask that all the current undergraduate students at Fairfield be mindful of the extremely fragile egos of Fairfield’s recently graduated community. With a little luck, you will all someday soon become a member!
P.S. – Please Facebook me.
Sincerely,
