To the Editor:
This letter is in response to the article “A senior reflects on lost band opportunities,” written by Meghan Doherty in the Feb. 24 issue. As FUSA VP of Programming, I am personally disappointed by the views Ms. Doherty expressed in her article. It is my role to understand what students want in terms of programming, including concerts. I feel that it is unfair and illogical for the author to draw the conclusion that “because The Roots are good, odds are we won’t be able to book them.” It is clear that Ms. Doherty has made a faulty assumption about something which she does not fully understand and did not fully investigate. I am always ready and willing to explain the procedures by which FUSA operates, as well as answer any questions about why certain decisions were made. Unfortunately, Ms. Doherty never made any attempt to contact me in order to better understand the concert process before writing her article.
Without disputing whether the acts that have performed here over the past four years have been “good,” it seems clear that the author is simply attacking FUSA about something she is uninformed about. The author would certainly have a better understanding of the concert process if she asked questions before criticizing FUSA’s choices, many of which have been well received by students. Ms. Doherty claims that FUSA needs to “step up their game.” Perhaps she should heed her own advice, “step up her game,” and find out the facts before an article goes to print. And by the way, Fairfield students will be enjoying a concert by The Roots on April 29, despite the fact that they are “good.”
Sincerely,
Jillian Grant ’05
VP of Programming
