Screams of joy could be heard around campus as Red Sox fans ran out of dorms and townhouses Sunday night to celebrate the team’s second World Series victory in four years.
A group of fans paraded through campus carrying brooms and chanting “Let’s Go Red Sox” and “Yankees Suck,” as others gathered in the Quad, all while Public Safety told them to go back inside and go to bed.
Boston swept the four-game series with the Colorado Rockies after battling back from a 3-1 deficit in the American League Championship series against the Cleveland Indians.
The Red Sox were led by World Series Most Valuable Player Mike Lowell, who hit .400 in the Series with one home run and four RBI.
All four starting pitchers, Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, Daisuke Matzusaka and Jon Lester, earned victories, while closer Jonathan Papelbon closed out three of the four wins.
The Red Sox battled through the Los Angeles Angels, sweeping them in three games and then the Indians en route to the World Series win.
It was the second time in four years that Red Sox fans on campus were able to celebrate victory in Fairfield, an area usually known as being part of New York Yankees’ territory.
The Sox fans were just as excited about the win as they were four years ago, when the Red Sox broke the “Curse of the Bambino” to win their first World Series since 1918.
Meanwhile, Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees third baseman and most likely the American League Most Valuable Player, announced he would be leaving New York after the season.
With the Red Sox victory, the Patriots’ success and the undefeated season of Boston College, it’s a happy time for Boston fans living in Fairfield.
