Halloween is just around the corner, and that means that students will soon be—if they aren’t already—in a frantic rush to put together their costumes for the highly anticipated “Halloweekend.” Whether it’s for a group or an individual, for a girl or a guy, Halloween wouldn’t be the same without the process of coming up with and putting together a killer costume (no pun intended).
Some of the most popular costume ideas circulating campus include sailors, Disney princesses and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For male students, their favorite sports player is a generally safe bet. Just because these costumes are common doesn’t make them bad, but many students feel the pressure to come up with something one-of-a-kind in order to avoid an accidental match with other groups or individuals. It’s not unusual for students to keep their costumes a surprise until Halloween night, hoping they will be the only one in their respective outfit.
For those who are still searching for a costume, look no further. Classic solo costumes for girls include the Elle Woods Bunny or Princess Mia from “The Princess Diaries.” With the recent announcement of a third rendition of the beloved movie, a Princess Mia costume would be well-timed. A white mini dress, tiara and some headphones are a simple and easy way to craft the outfit.
For groups, the Three Blind Mice, the Mystery Gang (or the Scooby Doo crew, for those who aren’t familiar), Cops and Robbers or “The Wizard of Oz” characters are perfect fits for friends who want to dress up together. Options like the Three Blind Mice and Cops and Robbers work better for groups that prefer a more cohesive, matching look, while “The Wizard of Oz” and “Scooby Doo” characters provide more varied choices. Additionally, most of these are fairly simple to put together, with costumes like the Three Blind Mice requiring little more than a pair of mouse ears and some sunglasses. Others, like the Mystery Gang, demand a little more effort, but they make for a creative and easily-recognizable ensemble. “The Wizard of Oz” works for groups as well as pairs, with Glinda and Elphaba making the rounds this year as one of the more popular costume ideas.
Another fun and easy costume idea that works for both individuals and groups is cowboys and cowgirls. All that’s needed is a pair of jeans, boots, a flannel shirt and a hat to top it all off.
While some prefer classic Halloween costumes, others prefer to add some humor into their attire.
“I’ll probably be a minion,” laughs Katelyn May ‘28. “I’ve been a minion for three years now.”
While my personal Halloween plans are still up in the air, my favorite costumes are those that are cheap and easy to put together and many college students feel the same way. As the infamous Halloweekend draws nearer, the buzz about costume ideas will only grow louder. Whether students choose to dress up as minions or mice, it’s bound to be an interesting mix!
