I ordered my first hot matcha latte of the season this weekend, which only means one thing: fall is officially here. As much as I love the striking changing color of the leaves and autumn festivities, I will say loud and proud that I hate cold weather. But, the dropping temperature does give me an excuse to dress in my warm and comfortable fall clothes, and I’m here to share all of my favorites for this chilly time of year.
- Crewnecks (Preferably Oversized)
I’ve heard them called sweatshirts and I’ve heard them called sweaters, but regardless of their name, crewnecks are something I cannot wait to pull out of my drawer all year. Despite only owning two real crewnecks, they are extremely easy to style and incredibly comfortable and cozy. Paired with a baggy pair of jeans and a turtleneck, or cargo pants and some chunky sneakers, crewnecks give an edgy look to what could be a basic outfit. Personally, they are my go-to when I want to look cute but am just too lazy to make an outfit. Hopefully, they never go out of style.
- Turtlenecks
Speaking of turtlenecks with crewnecks, the high-necked top makes a super stylish undershirt for fall outfits. I’ve had a wide turtleneck selection since high school and I only just recently decided to give one up. Thrown on under a sweater or tank top, these shirts are an added layer of warmth that also adds style and flair. Whether they are patterned or plain, I definitely recommend adding one to your closet.
- Beanies
Call me cringe if you want, but I love beanies. So much. A black one flaunting the word “BOSTON” showed up in my house quite randomly many years back, and I still wear it every fall and winter. Some beanies I own are brightly colored—highlighter yellow and orange—which is helpful when I’m craving a pop of color to my fall neutrals. Or, I have plain ones, too, for a more mellowed-out look. No matter which color or pattern you go for, you cannot deny that they actually help to keep you warm. And, who doesn’t like accessorizing?!
- Flannels
I’m almost positive this one won’t be super controversial, but flannels are a great fall addition that achieves style, comfort and warmth all in one. Something I particularly like about them is their duality—every flannel looks different, with a different collection and arrangement of colors. And, with the amount of farmer and cowboy parties that occur on campus, I’m sure it’ll be of great use. They’re cuter than a zip-up sweatshirt but still really casual.
- Cropped Zip-Up Sweatshirts
Emphasis on the word “cropped” here, please. The reason behind this emphasis is that I would not go out of my way to recommend a regular sweatshirt. Adding a crop makes a dress-down into a dress-up. In my wardrobe, I own a black one, and I must say it gives a clean look without going overboard. Getting plain colors also means it will match any outfit.
- Knit Sweaters
Knit sweaters are one of my favorite articles of clothing! Pullover or open in the front, long or short, they are pretty, fashionable and, again, warm, no matter the form. I have an orangey-red, open-faced one that I adore and it can compliment almost any outfit in my closet. It’s baggy, too, so I get to wrap it around myself and hide my arms in the sleeves if I get extra cold. These sweaters are not hard to find, so go get one! You and your mug of hot cocoa will thank me later.
- Anything in the Men’s Section of Thrift Stores
Don’t tell your dads and grandpas that I am stealing their old clothes! But, one of the first places I run to in any thrift store is the men’s section, where I have actually found a lot of flannels and crewnecks. I am a huge supporter of oversized clothing—one, because it keeps me warm and, two, because I just love the look of it—so these sections are usually perfect for what I’m looking for. Of course, this recommendation is really based on what you like, but I typically find pullovers, sweatshirts, sweaters, among the flannels and crewnecks, here. Some of my favorite spots are Salvation Army and Savers.
- A Sweatshirt and Sweatpants
I know, I know: I said I would never recommend a regular sweatshirt. But, this combination is a sure asset to my fall wardrobe and I had to give it the recognition it deserves. As I write this, I am wearing my Fairfield sweatshirt and my reliable pair of sweatpants, and I will probably change up the combination for class tomorrow. For anyone feeling lazy and chilly, this one’s for you. But, I’m sure you’ve all tried it anyway.
I’m no official fashionista but I do appreciate a good outfit. I know from firsthand experience that it’s difficult to be cute when the temperature falls, but these items are all super cute and super warm. I enjoy baggy clothes for colder months, but that might just be me. Happy shopping and stay warm!
