For first-years on campus, this first month has been a whirlwind.

With classes, clubs, sports and more, there are plenty of activities to take up students’ time. Additionally, the stress of trying to make friends and get to know classmates can weigh on students who are still adjusting to life at college.

Luckily for them, there are several resources on campus to aid in their transition and make the adjustment process a little bit easier. One of the most popular is Fairfield at Night, a program that provides students with fun activities to attend later in the day after classes are finished and their work is done.

Fairfield at Night has hosted several exciting events throughout the first month of this year, including trivia nights, DIY crafts and Bingo.

Some events are more mellow, like paint night, which was held just a few weeks ago on a Thursday night. Others draw a large crowd, like the “Create Your Own Bamboo Cup” event. There are constantly new, original events, and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Personally, I attended the “DIY Vision Board Night” and the “Paint Night.” Both were well-organized and enjoyable, with all materials provided and round tables that allowed for a large group of friends to hang out and chat.

The upperclassmen who organize the events are friendly and helpful, ready to make all students feel welcome.

At “Paint Night,” the canvases and paints were set out on a large table at the front, with additional materials at each of the tables so students could sit wherever they wanted. Most events are held in the lower level of the Barone Campus Center, an easy destination for kids to meet up and join their classmates for activities.

Fairfield at Night is a great way to get involved in the Fairfield community, make new connections or even just decompress after a long day. It offers a natural way for students to make friends, especially as students have the freedom to attend with a familiar group or to go alone and join a random table.

The events aren’t designed to force students to socialize; instead, they allow attendees to participate in whatever way they feel comfortable. Not only do Fairfield at Night activities alleviate the stress of trying to meet new people or find something to do in the later hours of the day, but they also often provide an FYE credit and sometimes there are great prizes for jeopardy or game nights. DIY nights also often provide a craft or souvenir to take back to the dorm, usually some form of decoration.

Recently, the Fairfield at Night events have included “DIY Room Pennants” and “Laser Tag and Wipeout.” When asked about her favorite Fairfield at Night events so far, Diana Carbone ‘28 had a few.

“I think bucket hats were good,” she commented, “and Bingo.” The wide range of activities and events available ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
