“Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!” Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a beloved NBC late-night comedy show that broadcasts new skits weekly on Saturday nights. Each week they have a special celebrity host and musical guest.
SNL often makes light of real-world problems such as the presidential election, most recently, along with the dark sides of Hollywood, climate change and war. The cast members appear each week in different skits. Some of the 2024 SNL cast includes the classic duo Colin Jost and Michael Che, Mikey Day, Bowen Yang, Sarah Sherman, Heidi Garner, Chloe Fineman and newcomer Marcello Hernández – just to name a few.
Recent SNL skits this past year have changed the trajectory of SNL for the better after some years of bad ratings. When favorite members Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong staggeredly departed from the show throughout the last couple of years, ratings declined. However, with the recent “Bridesmaid’s Speech” skit, SNL has been getting popular once again on TikTok. The skit features Chloe Fineman as the bride.

Her bridesmaids create their own parody of the song “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, mocking how modern-day weddings often have bridesmaids sing a song to the bride. The star of the show was definitely Domingo (Marcello Hernández), who got really into the skit.
First-year Emily Flynn shared “It’s funny to me because they are essentially telling the groom the bride cheated by singing their own version of Espresso. The funniest parts to me were the bad singing and when Domingo came out at the end, he sang his own verse.”
The weekend before the 2024 Presidential Election, Maya Rudolph acted as Kamala Harris in the skit “2024 Pre-Election Cold Open.” Kamala Harris herself was actually featured in the skit when Rudolph looks through the mirror! No matter what your political stance is, I think it was iconic that SNL could get an actual presidential candidate to be featured with the actor imitating them!

I found the recent “Little Richard” SNL skit comical because of Kenan Thompson’s character. His dress wear made me laugh because of the sparkles and how loud his character was. The family dresses more plainly and has more reserved personalities which shows character foils to Little Richard. The highlighted differences between everyone are what makes it humorous.
SNL is back and here to stay! Having relevant hosts and musical guests is definitely helping viewer ratings. With the holidays coming up soon, the skits around Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas will be memorable. The best part about SNL is that the script is fluid with the times of modern society. Any other good or bad events that happen in pop culture or the world will probably be featured. Look out for the “Brat Summer” pop star Charli XCX as both the host and musical guest this upcoming Saturday, Nov. 16!
