“I just wanna be part of your symphony…”

This past Saturday, the Stags were a part of Zara Larsson’s symphony at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Students ended Halloween weekend with a bang. This fall concert featured Fitz and the Tantrums as the openers and Zara Larsson on the mainstage. The crowd was “small but mighty” as Fitz and the Tantrums said.

Fitz and the Tantrums is a well-known Indie-Pop group. Their energy was electric on stage and the screen visuals were pleasing. The lead singer Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick kept the crowd going with chants. He moved around the stage and was talking to people in the crowd in between songs. The band’s crowd hits consisted of “HandClap,” “Out of My League” and “I Just Wanna Shine.”

After Fitz left the stage, the crowd prepared for Zara. Everyone was excitedly waiting for her to come on stage during the 15 minutes in between sets. Zara entered from the side, showing herself to the audience and waving to everyone before walking up to the stage. She emerged in a dazzling, blue denim set with rhinestones.

Larsson began with “Venus” from her newly debuted album “Venus.” Zara was very engaged with the crowd and had a dynamic stage presence. She performed her hit “Symphony” which has been popularized again since becoming part of a TikTok meme with dolphins. She even had dolphins with rainbows pop up on the screen in the background!

Her backup dancers performed effortlessly in ornate movements. First-year Trista Ouellette said, “The backup dancers were so fun to watch. As a dancer, my eyes are always drawn to the dance routines throughout shows and concerts.” Larsson is a great live performer who could belt high vocals while also keeping up with her backup dancers. First-year Olivia Newberry said that “I’ve never seen Zara before, so I really enjoyed hearing her music live in person.”

Zara did not only perform her new songs off of “Venus” but also memorable throwbacks from her 2017 hit album “So Good” such as “Lush Life,” “Ain’t My Fault,” and “I Would Like”. She also performed songs off of her 2021 album “Poster Girl” like “WOW” and “Ruin My Life”. Besides “Symphony,” the crowd was most hype during these songs.
The MainSTAGe Symphony was a fun night to spend time dancing and singing along to pop songs with friends. Lucas the Stag was even in attendance, rocking along with the music. There were many unforgettable moments throughout the concert such as Zara Larsson paying tribute to her Swedish origins by singing “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” by ABBA. What a way to end October and begin November here at Fairfield!
