Pop into any dorm room in the weeks leading up to Halloween and chances are you’ll find at least one, if not many, bags of Halloween candy lining the shelves. Although you probably won’t see any students trick-or-treating through the streets of Fairfield, that doesn’t mean that students aren’t stocking up in preparation for the holiday. For many students, memories of getting dressed up in a fun costume, walking around the neighborhood and collecting a horde of candy in a pumpkin-shaped basket or pillow case are what make Halloween special for so many. But what’s the best candy to collect on Halloween night or to have stashed away in the dorm?
Among students, Kit Kats, Reese’s and M&M’s might be some of the most popular. While some prefer the more underrated candies, others like to go with the classics. Students didn’t hesitate to share their opinions on what the greatest Halloween candy is.
For first-year Katherine Kilsey, her favorite Halloween candies bring back happy memories from her childhood. “My favorite Halloween candy is probably Kit Kats,” says Kilsey. “When I was younger I would always love getting the more random candies; if there was a little thing of jelly beans or Laffy Taffy, those were always exciting.” When asked about the kinds of candies that she was not so fond of, she answered, “I’m not a fan of Butterfingers.”
For first-year Anna Grace Yurek, her favorite candy is an easy choice. “My favorite Halloween candy would have to be Twix,” she says, “because it is so crunchy and gooey and covered in chocolate.” And when asked whether she preferred the right or left Twix, she chose the left. According to the Twix website, the difference between the left and right is in the consistency of the ingredients. While the left Twix is made of smooth caramel and crispy biscuit, the right Twix contains crunchy biscuit, soft caramel and milk chocolate. When asked about the candies that she doesn’t love so much, Yurek answered, “The most overrated Halloween candy is Almond Joy, because I really dislike coconut. Almond is fine, but the coconut is really annoying and it’s just unwelcome there.”
First-year Sydney Lundt tends to go for the chocolate candies, explaining, “I like Milky Ways or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.” When it comes to her least favorite, she agrees with Katherine. “I don’t really like Butter Fingers,” Lundt says. “I always get those, and I just never ate them.”
Personally, my favorite Halloween candy is anything chocolate. Whether it be Milky Ways or Hershey Bars, if it has chocolate, I’ll probably enjoy it. As for underrated candies, I think Three Musketeers are great, too.
Among other popular candies like Starbursts, Skittles and candy corn, the chocolate candies seem to be fan favorites among students. Kit Kats and Milky Ways tend to be crowd-pleasers at Halloween events, as are Hershey Bars, M&M’s and Reese’s. Butter Fingers, on the other hand, don’t seem to be as appreciated. No matter what types of candy students like best, they are stocked up and ready to enjoy their favorites this Halloween.
